Come taste new Italian goodies!

  • Wine at Five 4 Purchase Street Rye, NY, 10580 United States (map)

It's feeling like spring weather is finally confirming its presence in the forecast, with the promise of a clear and sunny weekend ahead.  We've been tirelessly attending wine industry tastings for the last month or so (what a drag!) and the shop is littered with new favorites. This Saturday we'll be pouring three new wines from very small and authentic growers.  We'll start popping corks around 1pm.  Come by and taste with us!
Favaro, Erbaluce di Caluso -  $25
Benito Favaro started this estate in 1992; it is truly a family operation, with Benito still looking after the vineyards, assisted by his son Nicola, his daughter Elena and her partner Claudio, with his other son Camillo serving as the winemaker. From the very beginning the Favaros have been particularly devoted to this indigenous white grape of Piedmont, Erbaluce, and still regard it as the heart and soul of their production. This delicious white is crisp and intense with aromas of gooseberry and hay, zesty and firm on the palate.  Lovely persistence and energy. 915 cases made.
Corte Pagliare Verdieri "Ven Crud" rosato -  $21
Another small, family run, organic farm located in the Po river plains, just outside of Mantova and near the beautiful hamlet of Sabbioneta, a Reinassance gem.
The winery was started in 1998 by Mimma Vignoli and her mother in law Amedea with roughly 8 acres of vineyards on clay soils incredibly well suited for vine-growing. The vines cultivated are different clones of Lambrusco such as Salamino and Sorbara, with focus on the Viadanese clone, indigenous of this part of Lombardia. Grapes for this wine were hand harvested in late September and fermented in steel tanks where it is kept until June then bottled unfiltered. The warm days prompt the start of a second fermentation in the bottle, bringing a slight effervescence to this savory rosé.  The wine then rests one year in the bottle before release. It has no residual sugar and a little sediment.  285 cases made
Podere sul Lago, "Torcular" Rosso - $25
This small winery is the project of Sandrino Quadraroli, the owner of one of the finest restaurants in central Marche, Osteria del Borgia.  Always a champion of the wines of his region, starting in 2012 he was finally able to crown his dream of producing wine.  The 15 acre vineyard was planted in 1999, on clay, sandy and calcareous soil 500 meters above sea level on the south-facing hills right above lake Caccamo in the mountainous central part of the Marche region.
Sandrino's focus is the grape indigenous to this sub-region: Vernaccia Nera, not found anywhere else in the world. This grape has a long history, however it was traditionally vinified sparkling and semi-sweet, possibly in order to tame the variety's bold and spicy characteristics. Over the past two decades or so, a new generation of wineries in the area is concentrating on exalting the unique character of Vernaccia Nera and are bottling still, dry wines. The results are fascinating: the wines are distinctive, aromatic, full-bodied but elegant and vibrant.   800 cases made.
